Parents are naturally concerned about maintaining their child’s learning if they are going to be absent from school for more than a few days. However, keeping up with school work in this situation is not regular homework and is not the teacher’s responsibility. In situations where a child will be absent for an extended period of time, parents are responsible for their child’s learning.

While children are away I usually recommend the following:

-keep a journal

-read a collection of fiction and nonfiction books

-maintain basic math skills by using a workbook or by using cards to play a math game

Teachable moments happen regularly during a day and, unfortunately, cannot be transferred onto a worksheet. Students who are absent for extended periods and miss significant portions of the term's work may also not receive term letter grades in some subjects.

School is important. When a student is being pulled out for a few days (or more), it affects not only his learning and well being but other students' learning.

Thanks for your understanding!
