About Me

Working as a teacher:

I have been working for the Vancouver School Board for the past 14 years and during that time, I have taught all grades at the intermediate level. I have spent the first 10 years working at Ecole Jules Quesnel, an elementary school near UBC, and this will be my fifth year at Lord Strathcona Elementary.

My goal is to make learning engaging. Each student has his/her own learning style and I feel it is important to give everyone choices and autonomy when it comes to doing school work and being involved in a project. I like to set clear boundaries with my students but I also like to give them the freedom to create and collaborate with each other.

Things I like:

Some of my interests include reading, gardening, camping, hiking, climbing, and skiing. Teaching and working with kids is also a passion of mine and I can often be found planning, reading, researching and discussing issues related to education. And sometimes, I like to do this while I hike and camp, to the detriment of all the loved ones in my life, who aren't necessarily teachers.

I enjoy teaching all subjects of the curriculum. I like to keep a balance and this usually shows in my teaching as well. Literacy and numeracy are two essential components of my program but I also love integrating these into other aspects of the curriculum (Science, Social Studies, Fine Arts and Health & Career). I also like to follow current events and it isn't uncommon that I plan lessons inspired by what is going on in the world. I am also often inspired by what is happening in the classroom and in my students' lives.

Whenever possible, I try to integrate the use of technology into my teaching. As technology is everywhere, I want to show my students how to use it smartly and responsibly. Teaching digital citizenship and online etiquette is also important. Throughout the year, we will often be discussing this in class. I hope the students will be able to share their learning with you as well.

I also love "making" things. I sew, knit and recently started doing some pottery (wheel throwing). I believe learning something new again is helping me understand my students better as just like them, I am constantly faced with new challenges and need to "stay calm" and learn to communicate my frustrations appropriately.

I am honored to be your child's teacher this year and hope he/she will have a successful year learning with me!

About Annie:

My name is Annie and I'm a French Immersion teacher. I was born and raised in Beaupré, a small town near Québec city. I speak French and English and I have a Bachelor of Arts in French Literature as well as a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia. I recently completed a Master of Education in Educational Practice at Simon Fraser University. My area of interest during my last inquiry was around community building between the French and English stream students. My previous inquiries were spent exploring the use of voice recorders and technology in the classroom. If you'd like to know more about what I did, just ask. I will be happy to share my findings with you.
